Joomla! extensions

Joomla! offers its' users extension features which allow easy website customisation and enriched website functionality. There are five types of extensions offered to Joomla! users: components, plugins, templates, modules, and languages.

Components, also referred to as mini-applications, are the main functional units of Joomla!. A good comparison would be that Joomla! like Windows 2007 is an operating system and the components are its' desktop applications.

Generally, components will have two parts: back-end and front-end. The front-end is the main part of your website where most of the traffic occurs. The back-end enables administrators and other site officials to manipulate the site.
